Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. Pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.
~ The Apostle Paul
The Apostle Paul strongly desired to proclaim God’s message clearly. He mentored Timothy down that same path telling him, Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth (2 Tim. 2:15).
Christmas is coming. Many people will again be in earshot of God’s message over the holidays. Let’s pray that doors get opened not just in worship venues, but at dinner tables, around fireplaces, and on long road trips. Pray that the message of Jesus gets proclaimed clearly as it should – by you, by me, and by all other disciples – throughout the world.
Lord God, I join with others continuing to pray for open doors for the Gospel. I pray for more disciples like Paul and Timothy who are willing to take your message into other parts of the world. Loose my tongue, open my ears, and work my schedule that I may be a messenger of your Gospel as well. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people”.
I sure wish – maybe even pray – that everyone in the world could rejoice in the good news of Jesus. He is for all people, from the nearest Israelite shepherds to the farthest Gentile sheep. The joy of the Gospel is not necessarily intended to be a Christian celebration, but a human celebration – a celebration of God redeeming humanity as a human being.
Lord God, let the original message of the Christmas season continue to push to the ends of the earth, breaking through language, social, and cultural barriers. And let the original message push deeper into our hearts, minds, souls and closest relationships. May the good news – the news of your goodness in Jesus – cause great joy to great numbers of people, including me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
• In Christ, I am connected to the Vine that is rooted in the Stump of Jesse: I am a branch of the Righteous Branch Jesus.
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him…
When you take a look at your family tree, is it rooted in the ‘Shoot’ that comes up from the stump of Jesse? Is it attached to the vine of Christ? Pray that it is so. And may the Spirit of the Lord that rested on Jesus bless you with a Merry Christmas of being rested upon by the Spirit as well.
Father God, I pray that myself and all of my family are rooted in you – rooted in your Son Jesus the Vine, the Shoot, or Branch, as the case may be. May we draw life-giving energy from him so that we may be like trees planted by streams of water that bear their fruit in season. We are his fruit; let us bear fruit in the name of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.
~ Jesus,
Think about this: Jesus says “I want those you have given me to be with me.” The original disciples (and us by extension in his prayer) are gifts from the Father to the Son Jesus, and he has wrapped us up in love and forgiveness. Merry Christmas early!
You are a gift from God the Father to Jesus the Son. Whom else might God be blessing through your “presence”?
From the perspective of being God’s gift, think of where you have instead withheld blessings, words of affirmation, support, or encouragement? This would confessing sins of omission – what you failed to do as God desires of you.
See yourself as a gift of God to Jesus. And Ask God to reinstate you in your role as a gift to bless others (this could be for a spouse, family, neighbors, church members, workers, etc.).
[Provide your own prayer to end today's devotion.]
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:3-5) Disciples of Jesus must have the greatest commitment to humility. Nothing was deeper in his character. Charles Jefferson is right in saying that in Matthew 11:29 Jesus is basically saying "Come unto me. I have something to teach you; I should like to teach you humility."
p.35, The Prideful Soul’s Guide to Humility, Fontenot/Jones
In seeking to grow as disciples of Jesus – including in the area of Christ-like humility – there are three crucial components God uses to bring about spiritual growth: His Word, His Spirit, & His people. We review the first of those today:
The ideal is to be in God’s Word daily, not just to read, but also to note how you are responding to it in your spirit, thoughts, and emotions. Highlight words and phrases that catch your attention and ask God about them, knowing that he desires to shape and mold you. Consider the spiritual discipline of journaling, even if only a line or two. Feel free read the context to scripture passages (verses before and after).
Lord Jesus, you came to testify to the truth. You testified that you yourself are Truth. Bring me deeper into the truth, deeper into you. I want nothing to get in the way. Show me how to make that happen. Amen.
The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
The Bible reveals nothing about the character, heart, or thoughts of the shepherds prior to their introduction into the Christmas story. We are merely told that they were out in the fields that night doing their job. They may have been spiritual or unspiritual, godly or ungodly, but what they were not is this: They were not forgotten by God. Far from forgotten, they were invited by God into an unforgettable experience that would change the world.
We don't know what the heart prayers of the shepherds were, but we know that once they experienced all that amazing action, they went away glorifying God and praising him for everything that they had heard and seen. Sometimes it requires an experience from God to redirect our hearts and our lives in the way that he wants us to go. Do you have some heart prayers and yearnings that could use some re-direction from God? Check in with him about this.
Father God, if you need to break into my heart's desires and yearnings and alter my heart prayers, then so be it. I want my desires to line up with yours and my yearnings to submit to your will. Continue to change my heart and help me be in a position to see and hear what you are doing in and around me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
The very presence of Jesus on earth is what brings glory to God in the highest heaven and peace to those on whom his favor rests.
The message of the angels, the hope of several beauty pageant participants, the point of Christmas: Peace on earth between God and man, thanks be to Jesus, and glory to God in the highest.
Father God, help us to build a gentle approach toward others, both those inside your family and out. Nudge to us make in-flight repairs whenever we misstep or misspeak, being willing to seek forgiveness as well as offer it. By your Holy Spirit, help us to find hidden concerns that lie behind people’s questions, issues or problems – and then respond appropriately. Remind us that we’re part of a team, your team, and to see (and do) our work as teamwork. Finally, teach us the value and power of words, particularly supportive words, and to use them powerfully on people that you value – all people. To your glory, let us be your GIFTS to the people around us. Amen.
This second prayer comes from Pastor’s personal daily prayer and he would relish you joining him in praying this prayer on his behalf.
Lord God Almighty, our Father and our God, I pray that you enable Pastor Paul’s mind (heart, soul, and will) to gain understanding – and that he humbles himself before You. God,
You are seeking after him and there are things happening around him that are calling for a deeper spiritual understanding and practice on his part. Help him to rise to the occasion.
Bless him as he comes to experience more of this needed spirituality in this climate of today. Help him choose to not settle for less, but hunger for you above all things. He comes at your request knowing that he cannot find you without the Holy Spirit. He needs you today.
Bless him to hear and follow. Show him the way and strengthen him as he pursues it. Guide him and enlighten him -- particularly in those spiritually dark places; encourage him when he gets weary, challenge him in the comfortable and ordinary places - and protect him, Father God, from his enemy, the evil one.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
