Review and Re-Center Around God

On the church calendar, today is Ascension, recalling the time when Jesus ascended into heaven with a promise to return at some point.

Ten days later was the festival of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples in a remarkable way. In between, the disciples waited in prayer for this promised Holy Spirit that Jesus had spoken of (see John 14:15).

John 14:15

“If you love me, keep my commands."
~ Jesus

What might they have prayed for? Maybe for the promises of Jesus to be fulfilled; the coming of God’s Spirit, and/or the will of God to be done. They kept knocking until the Father answered -- with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Review the Week

Review the current state of your prayer life: Is it healthy or not-so-much? It is active or dormant? Private only or shared with others as well? Would you describe yourself as dependent on God, self, or others?

Repent (if necessary)

Seek a deeper elucidation beyond your initial response to the questions above. Probe deeper; keep seeking. Expect God to instruct you through His Holy Spirit.

That is what you're after, unless you don't want to know.

Return (as necessary)

Knock on your heart's door and find out whether God has His rightful place in your heart, the central influence of your life. If, upon review, He is already there – praise God! If, after review, He is not central, adjustments need to be made; “return as necessary” – and then praise God!

Prayer

Father God, I come asking regarding my own heart, seeking answers that shed light on my current prayer patterns and habits. Let's remove whatever is inappropriate and make sure You have Your rightful place in my life. In Jesus name I pray this....

Micro-Meditation Scripture

Psalm 119:25-32 (Daleth, 4th letter)

  1. I am laid low in the dust;
    preserve my life according to your word.
  2. I gave an account of my ways and you answered me; teach me your decrees.
  3. Cause me to understand
    the way of your precepts, that I may meditate on your wonderful deeds.
  4. My soul is weary with sorrow;
    strengthen me according to your word.
  5. Keep me from deceitful ways;
    be gracious to me and teach me your law.
  6. I have chosen the way of faithfulness;
    I have set my heart on your laws.
  7. I hold fast to your statutes, LORD;
    do not let me be put to shame.
  8. I run in the path of your commands,
    for you have broadened my understanding.

Pondering Point

What would you point to in your life showing that you have "chosen the way of faithfulness?"
