Discipleship Point

Hebrews 6:19-20

19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.

Christ (in Greek) = Messiah (in Hebrew) = Anointed One (in English)

The Office of Christ (From Luther’s Catechism):

Jesus was anointed to be our Prophet, Priest, and King. As Priest, Jesus the Christ fulfilled the Law perfectly in our stead, described by Luther as active obedience (see Galatians 4:4-5); He also sacrificed Himself for our sins, known as passive obedience (see 1 Corinthians 15:3, 1 John 2:2). And Jesus still pleads for us with His Heavenly Father, known as intercession (see 1 John 2:1).

As children of God, we too are priests, known collectively as the Priesthood of Believers, called to similar obedience and intercession for the sake of others.

Discipleship Prayer

Lord Jesus, my High Priest, thank You for sacrificing Yourself for my sake; I love that Your “office hours” as priest are 24/7. Remind me, by Your Holy Spirit, to avail myself of Your office hours and benefit from Your discipling leadership daily in my life 24/7.

Micro-Meditation Scripture

Psalm 84:1-8

  1. How lovely is your dwelling place, LORD Almighty!
  2. My soul yearns,
    even faints for the courts of the LORD
    my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
  3. Even the sparrow has found a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may have her young
    — a place near your altar,
    LORD Almighty, my King and my God.
  4. Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
    they are ever praising you.
  5. Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
  6. As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;
    the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
  7. They go from strength to strength,
    till each appears before God in Zion.
  8. Hear my prayer, LORD God Almighty;
    listen to me, God of Jacob.

Pondering Point

Psalm 84:7-9a from the Lord’s perspective:

God: I am your strength. I promise that I will help you get here,
giving you strength upon strength,
like I desire to do with all who heed My call
to come before Me, the Lord God Almighty.
Seek Me – in prayer; in life; I am listening; look for Me;
look to Me, for I am your Great Shield and Reward.
