Proverbs 27 and John 13, 14

Proverbs 27:17

As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.

Going it alone is not the best way; it’s not even a godly way. God encourages us (commands us 😊) to encourage one another, to bear with, love, teach, admonish, and pray for one another. This is sharpening each other.

How are you living out this “sharpening each other” facet of your life?

Proverbs 27:1-27

  1.  Do not boast about tomorrow,
for you do not know what a day may bring.
  2. Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth;
an outsider, and not your own lips.
  3. Stone is heavy and sand a burden,
but a fool’s provocation is heavier than both.
  4. Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?
  5. Better is open rebuke
    than hidden love.
  6. Wounds from a friend can be trusted,
    but an enemy multiplies kisses.
  7. One who is full loathes honey from the comb,
but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.
  8. Like a bird that flees its nest
is anyone who flees from home.
  9. Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the pleasantness of a friend
    springs from their heartfelt advice.
  10. Do not forsake your friend or a friend of your family,
and do not go to your relative’s house when disaster strikes you—
better a neighbor nearby than a relative far away.
  11. Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart;
then I can answer anyone who treats me with contempt.
  12. The prudent see danger and take refuge,
but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
  13. Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger;
hold it in pledge if it is done for an outsider.
  14. If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning,
it will be taken as a curse.
  15. A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping
    of a leaky roof in a rainstorm;
  16. restraining her is like restraining the wind
or grasping oil with the hand.
  17. As iron sharpens iron,
    so one person sharpens another.
  18. The one who guards a fig tree will eat its fruit,
and whoever protects their master will be honored.
  19. As water reflects the face,
so one’s life reflects the heart.
  20. Death and Destruction are never satisfied,
    and neither are human eyes.
  21. The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold,
but people are tested by their praise.
  22. Though you grind a fool in a mortar,
grinding them like grain with a pestle,
you will not remove their folly from them.
  23. Be sure you know the condition of your flocks,
    give careful attention to your herds;
  24. for riches do not endure forever,
and a crown is not secure for all generations.
  25. When the hay is removed and new growth appears
and the grass from the hills is gathered in,
  26. the lambs will provide you with clothing,
and the goats with the price of a field.
  27. You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed your family
and to nourish your female servants.

John 13:1-38

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet

1 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

2 The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; 4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

6 He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

7 Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

8 “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

9 “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal
18 “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: ‘He who shared my bread has turned against me.’

19 “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am. 20 Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”

21 After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”

22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. 23 One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. 24 Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.”

25 Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

26 Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him.

So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.” 28 But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. 29 Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor. 30 As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial
31 When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.

33 “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.

34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

36 Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?”

Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”

37 Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

38 Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

John 14:1-31

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Jesus the Way to the Father
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”

9 Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21 Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”

22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?”

23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

28 “You heard me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me.

“Come now; let us leave.

Gift for the Day

Gift Bow

A new command I give you:
Love one another.
As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
~John 13:34

This gift is a new command from Jesus – and yet it is an old one: Love one another. Its new because He says to love as He has loved, thus adding a new twist. Love can take on many forms, but all those forms involve investing in and connecting with others – and allowing others to invest in and connect with us.

Isaiah Challenge:
Volunteer for God

Volunteering at church is an easy go-to and highly appreciated, but it is only one of many opportunities to serve in God’s name. To volunteer for God is to allow Him to use you as His investment tool and point of connection into the lives of others. And keep in mind that you don’t volunteer for thanks, but out of thanks to God.

Isaiah 6:1-8

Isaiah’s Commission

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

Romans 13:8

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellowman has fulfilled the law.

John 13:34-35

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (see also 1 John 3:11; 3:23; 4:7; 4:11; 4:12)

Hebrews 13:1

Keep on loving each other as brothers.

1 Peter 4:8

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

1 Thessalonians 3:12, 4:9

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else just as ours does for you… Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

Micro-groupers look to build trust

Trust is one of the by-products of loving relationships. Once a sense of trust is been established, MGers find themselves free to share more private aspects of who they are (strengths and weaknesses, dreams and fears, struggles and hopes) and great growth can result.

Build intentionality into the mix and you create even more opportunity for personal growth for all parties involved. This is key in discipling relationships. The greatest of these relationships happens when each person serves as a catalyst for another’s growth, making the benefits mutual.
