Jesus Faces Opposition
Matthew 11:25-30
Jesus Offers Rest to the Weary
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. 26 Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
27 “All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Pondering Point
Jesus knows first-hand that weariness can be part of the human experience. He also knows that religious leaders can add to that weariness with unnecessarily burdensome rules and regulations that go beyond the instruction of God’s word. AND He also knows that, even though life has burdens and weariness, rest is available in and through Him.
Let’s not needlessly live with a weariness Jesus promised can be dealt with. As the prophet Jeremiah encouraged, Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD (Lamentations 3:30). Again, see the Examen as another tool for your spiritual belt of truth.
Here are the 5 steps to the Examen, this week’s spiritual discipline of prayer (generally taking about 15 minutes to do). Look back in the week to review each area along the way.
- Recognize that you are in the presence of God
- Look at your day with gratitude
- Ask for help from the Holy Spirit
- Review your day
- Reconcile and resolve (record observations on paper)
