Discipleship Point and Prayer

FRIDAY'S BIT OF
        DISCIPLESHIP

Fridays continue to include a Discipleship Point and subsequent Discipleship Prayer. Though generally taken from sources like Discipleship materials, Luther’s Small Catechism, or Bible themes, starting in January, we are drawing from a book called The Great Sending, which will be used Fridays and Saturdays.

That Discipleship point and prayer will be preceded by a snippet from another book titled The Prideful Soul’s Guide to Humility by Michael Fontenot and Thomas Jones. Humility is a great asset in relationships with both God and people. We desire to instill some godly humility into our lives as disciples of Jesus. That quote will conclude with a prayer based on the reading, similar to the one below:

Humility Prayer

Lord Jesus, I want to follow you and learn to be like you, gentle and humble in heart. I want to learn to take up your yoke and burden and in doing so find the rest that my soul so desperately seeks – and needs. Amen

Here is this week’s quote:

If we would pursue humility, we must deliberately remind ourselves of where we came from and who brought us to where we are today. Paul at the end of his life and missionary journeys writes: Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst (1 Timothy 1:15).

Discipleship Point

As we immerse in God’s Word regularly in the life of the church, we do so expecting to meet God through the experience; a person may read the bible with different intentions, among them:

  • Intellectual (to learn about God and His ways)
  • Emotional (for strength, comfort, support)
  • Guidance-driven (seeking direction, advice)
  • Experiencing God through His Word

Our chief goal with God’s Word is to bring about an encounter with the Living God, known as the Father of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ – our Father in Heaven – Abba. We know that God uses such encounters to create, sustain, or grow faith in His people and complete work he aims it to do in and through us.

Discipleship Prayer

Father God, help me build and follow through on a plan to immerse into your Word regularly both on my own and as part of your body the church. Grow and sustain my faith – our faith – so that you are able to complete the work you desire to do in and through me. In Jesus I pray. Amen.

Proverbs with God's Wisdom

There is a way… (remember? Memory work 😊)
Can you remember a time that you were absolutely convinced your path was right, but it ended up wrong?

Proverbs 14:12

There is a way that seems right to a man,
but in the end it leads to death.
