As Sent Ones, disciples intentionally
immerse themselves in a relationship with
God through prayer… to praise and worship Him

Your Biblical Identity in Christ

Romans 12:1-3

A Living Sacrifice

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you

• In view of God’s mercy to me in Christ, I offer my body as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—my spiritual act of worship. I will not conform to the pattern of this world but will be transformed by the renewing of my mind.

Pondering Point

All godly worship is a response – a reaction – to the work of God in life, including His work of mercy in our lives and in the lives of those we hold dear. There can be many reasons to worship God, but 1 John 4:19 describes it in perhaps the simplest form: We love because he first loved us. That loving God response can be weekend worship in a sanctuary or weekday worship in a park; it can be workday worship over lunch or workout worship at a gym. Maybe it is commuting worship in a car or washing worship in the home. It can be you alone, with a few key spiritual allies, maybe in a small group, or with that traditional larger group we first mentioned: The weekend worship body.

Now let’s draw a distinction between knowing God’s will (from His Word) and doing His will. For instance, there is knowing a principle: God is merciful and I should respond in worship by offering my body as a living sacrifice. At this point there is knowledge of a principle but no action. Now consider someone who actively embodies this same principle: Since God is being merciful to me, I am going to respond in worship by offering my body as a living sacrifice in order to please Him. This second individual is who we want to become.

Prayer

Father God, thank You for Your mercy that comes through Jesus Christ my Lord and his death for my sins. In light of that mercy, I am offering my body as a living sacrifice to You. Renew my mind that I may know Your good and pleasing will – and by the power of Your Holy Spirit carry it out. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
