FRIDAY'S BIT OF
DISCIPLESHIP

Humility in discipling: First, we need to remind ourselves whose disciples they are. Second, we must disciple from a position of openness. Third, we must show willingness to take input from those we lead.

Humility Prayer

Lord Jesus, when I practice loving and discipling other people, help me keep in mind that these are Your disciples (or soon-to-be disciples hopefully). May I treat them as such, displaying an open heart, open ears, and willing spirit to learn from them as well as be a blessing to them as Your servant. Amen.

MISSIO DEI

Discipleship Point

What is the significance of “One Holy Christian Apostolic Church” in light of the Missio Dei in John 17?

For centuries, the Christian community of faith and mission has confessed one holy Christian (catholic) apostolic church in the Nicene Creed. This reflects the Missio Dei.

Christian. The Christian church is based on the centrality of Christ, who with authority gives His people eternal life and the means to know the only true God and Jesus Christ. A Christian is one who, in relationship with Christ, knows Christ and possesses His gifts, His oneness, His holiness, His love, and His presence, all the while being in the world, but not of the world (John 17). The church is catholic, or universal, in the saving faith wherever the Gospel is preached.

See the following Scriptures in your bible or on pp. 262-264 of The Great Sending book: Matthew 28:18-20, 1 Peter 2:9, John 17:20, Ephesians 2:19-22, Ephesians 4:3-6, Romans 12:4-5, 1 Peter 2:5, Acts 2:42 (For further study see the Third Article, The Apostle’s Creed, Luther’s Small Catechism.)

Discipleship Prayer

Lord Jesus, may I and the local church I connect with be in vibrant relationship with You. Let us possess and use Your gifts, operate in Your holiness, and walk in Your love as part of the one, holy, Christian, apostolic church. Amen.
