Scripture Story for the Week

Luke 18:1-5

The Parable of the Persistent Widow

This will be your second time through this parable if you did the devotion on Tuesday; see if you can recall the story from memory.

The lesson finishes with a question of whether Jesus will find faith on the earth, meaning that God will be faithful on His part (to His Word) – but will we, the people of God, be faithful to the end?

The question is not one for which Jesus doesn't know the answer. Rather, the question is intended to spark a response in us: Will our faith remain steadfast despite struggles we face?

Let us trust God beyond reason and understanding, beyond circumstance and struggle. We are overcomers in Christ – now and for eternity.

1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. 3 And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’

4 “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”

Prayer for the Day

Father God, let the truth of scripture settle deep into our souls and deep into our hearts. Let it help us learn to persist in prayer despite difficult circumstances that might lead others to despair. Let Your Spirit encourage our spirits to continue steadfast in both faith and prayer through to the end; we ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
