Disciples follow Jesus’ example
of praying with persistence
Following Jesus as We Come 'n Go
Matthew 6:6
When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
~ Jesus
Pondering Point
Today in our coming and going theme, we zero in on Jesus' call to go pray in our “closet.” This could be a real closet of course, or maybe a quiet hallway, a spare room, unused office space or a local park. The point is to have a place where it can be just you and God. The mere presence of other people influences our behavior – even in prayer.
You don't need to be praying in front of people (this part of scripture discourages just that). The idea is to get away from people and give God your full attention.
That said, nowadays it is also helpful to separate yourself from technology that constantly cries out for your attention. Some of you may use a smart phone to assist in your devotional life. If this is you, make a conscious choice to not respond to messages or notifications during your prayer time.
Do you have a place (or places) that you can get away to spend time praying with God (speaking and listening)? Having a "go-to" place of prayer can help facilitate a more consistent prayer life. Develop one – and use it!
Prayer for the Day
Father God, help me to develop a place, a plan and a practice to meet with You – daily even. I know it will bring spiritual blessings. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
