Saturday's Scripture Story
for the Week

Zacchaeus in Jericho

Luke 19:1-10

Zacchaeus the Tax Collector

1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. 3 He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” 6 So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

7 All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.”

8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Pondering Point

Read the story from Luke 19:1-10 where we take in a story of Jesus enlisting the unlikely Zacchaeus as one of His “soldiers” you might say.

Jesus had some training to do in Zacchaeus – and some attitude adjustment, but it happened. God can do a lot with people who come and join His army. You are already in a war (see Ephesians 6:10-20); are you enlisted?

Ephesians 6:10-20

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. 19 Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.

Take a moment to read 2 Timothy 2:1-4. Then follow up with the prayer prompt below.

2 Timothy 2:1-4

The Appeal Renewed

1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others. 3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.

Journal Prompt:
Ask God:

  • Are there any Zacchaeus-like changes I need to make?
  • How can I better prepare to stand against my enemy?
  • How do I best operate under the direction of my commanding officer?

Lord Jesus, You shepherd sheep of various ages and types, sizes and styles, cultures and backgrounds. Thank You for such gracious acceptance of us; help us also to be gracious and loving, accepting and forgiving – even joyful – over all of Your sheep, regardless of our differences or varying backgrounds. In Your name we pray. Amen.
