Disciples Heed Jesus'
Warning About Pharisees

Placeholder Picture

Pharisee: a member of an ancient Jewish sect noted for a strict observance of traditional and written law; commonly had reputed attitude of spiritual superiority.

Not all pharisees were bad, but there were enough bad ones to merit a warning from Jesus about them. We will find out why during devotional focus this week.

Following Jesus as We Come 'n Go

Matthew 9:13

But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
~Jesus

Pondering Point

While Jesus’ comment is a helpful principle for everyone to be aware of, it is not a lesson everyone needs to “go and learn.” That is because some people already practice what Jesus desired: mercy rather than sacrifice; not the pharisees who engaged Jesus that day. These Pharisees were questioning Jesus’ methods. He in turn questioned their approach to life. As we go about our way of living for Jesus (hopefully), this verse can serve as a good reminder to hold back criticism of those whose methods may not align with ours. After all, Jesus did tell his own disciples “whoever is not against us is for us” (Luke 9:50). Coming off like a pharisee can happen quite easily. Let’s try instead, to come off like Jesus, pursuing mercy rather than sacrifice.

Prayer for the Day

Lord Jesus, help us to look more like you than the pharisees while we interact with people. In Your name I pray. Amen.
